Flax Weaving

We were very lucky today - Reuben's Mum, Dad and Aunty came in to teach us all about flax weaving! We learnt about how people use flax in their lives eg bags, clothing, ropes and even shoes!  Reon showed us which part of the flax bush to cut and then Vicky and Chrystal taught us how to weave a flower.  It was tricky at first but we all managed to complete our piece of work and everyone felt very proud of their efforts.  Reon told us that it is traditional to give away the first piece that you make, so the class have given their flowers to Mrs Siave to display within the school.  Everyone had a wonderful time and we are very grateful to Reuben's family for giving up their time to pass on and share their knowledge and skills.

Swimming in our PJ's!!

Today was the last day of swimming lessons for our class.  To finish off the swimming programme some of the students had to bring along their pj's to practise swimming in clothing.  The children had to swim 25m then dread water for 1minute before trying to take off their clothing in the water. Then they had a series of relays that involved kicking and balancing ducks!  The children have made great progress in their swimming ability and today was a awesome way to end a successful swimming programme - check
