Earthquake Stories

On February 22nd at 12:51 Christchurch was devastated by a 6.3 earthquake.  In Rm 15 we have had the opportunity to talk, write and draw about our personal experiences of this earthquake.  Below are some of our stories.

22nd/2/11  12:40 I was eating my lunch while Mrs Siave was drawing hilarious cartoons on the whiteboard.

12:51 The ground was shaking I was confused and scared, then I saw everyone getting under tables and I knew it was a earthquake.  I went under the table into a turtle, I was shocked, amazed and starting to get dizzy then it stopped.

Afternoon: I got up from the table and looked outside. It was terrible there were kids frightened and crying.  Mrs siave let us outside. I saw Ella crying so I went over to see if she was ok and all she wanted was to see her sister. Then wobble wobble wobble that was another one. The fire crew came to see if we were ok then ring ring ring that was the bell to go over to the rec.  The whole class went to line up while Mrs Siave called out the roll. Then Mr Barber and the teachers said to only stay in the rec.  All I did was hang out with my friends that were upset.  Then I  went to the end of the rec and saw my mum and my little brother.  So then I started to rub my tears off my face and started to jump up and down.  Mum walked into the rec and I ran up to her and sqeezed her.  I was so happy to see her.  Mum got all of my sisters and before we left we first had to tell my teacher we were leaving

Following days:  When we got home I started to feel like spewing I was so dizzy.  Then we watched the news I was so angry, and really worried about my Dad because he was in town and he couldn't get the car.  Someone that he knew had to drive him. His car was below in a car park that was starting to flood. But then my Dad rang up and said he got the car. Then a few hours later he was home and me and my sisters ran up to him and cuddled him.

This earthquake really scared me.  Lots of people died and I was lucky that my family survived.  This will be something I will always remember.

EARTHQUAKE

12:40: I was eating my lunch and
pratising how to do the cartoon face.  Everyone was talking about how cool it was.
12:51: As I was eating the ground began to shake.
The teacher said ''turtle and under
your desk''.  We waited under our desks until it stoped shaking.
The rest of the afternoon: 5 minutes after the shake, we all went outside.  While I was outside it started to shake again.  Soon Mr
Baber took the whole school out to the middle of the Rec, so we were safe.  Then Mum arrived and took me home.  When I was watching T.V. there was another big shake.  That night my Aunty came from town, her house was not broken it was just very messy.
She has stayed in our house for 8
day's now.
I haven't felt any aftershocks for 1
week now.  I hope there won't be any soon.  I think it is weird that they found a time capsule under the statue.  It's a shame that the cathedral steeple fell over.  It was good no-one got hurt at school, and
that Woodend had no silt come out
from the ground.  There are some amazing rescue stories from people who survived the rubble.  It's good
that search and rescue people came
from other countries to help Christ-church.  It makes it worse that looters come around stealing stuff from other buildings.

22/2/11

12:40 I had a wrap from lunch.

12:51 The class was shaking so we went under our desks and did a turtle.  When the shaking stopped we went outside.  People were playing when another earthquake hit .  I dropped down in the turtle position in the quad then the bell started to ring.  The whole scholl went to the Rec.  I was feeling very scared because I couldn't find Tessa.  We had to line up in our classes and I found Tessa.

Later I went for a walk with some of my friends and saw some people were upset. Some people were stupid and  thought it was cool.  I didn' like it - I
hate Earthquakes.

People went home.  Dad picked Miriam and I up from school at 3:00 o'clock and we went home.  Usually Mum picks me up but she had been horse riding and didn't  feel it.  Dad had left work early.

At home we watched t.v. and played on the computer.  I was at home for the rest of the week as school was closed because of the earthquake, so there wasn't much to do.  But on Thursday we had the funniest day ever . We went to dad's cousins and played games inside and outside.

I went back to school on the 1st March.

12:40 Everyone was eating lunch or drawing doodles.

12:51 EARTHQUAKE HITS!!!  I am worrying about my Dad because I know he is in Cathedral Square.  Things started to move.  I felt sorry for my brother because he was scared.  My oldest brother was at his girlfriends house in Manderville.  Ezra had to jump out of the way from a bus about to tip over.  And my Nana's 120 year old house is even worse since last time.  My Uncle had to go and pick my dad up from city centre while we stayed at his house ALONE!!

Following days:  We played at home on the game and went to see family and friends in Rangiora and Kaiapoi.  And the day after that I went mini golfing with my cousins.  Buildngs still have people in them.  Like the Cathedral, PGC, Press, CTV, Grand Chancellor.  The earthquake was centered in Lyttelton and humungous boulders fell down.  There are huge cracks all through footpaths, roads and houses.  Silt is in peoples houses, backyards and everywhere.  Rescuers are coming from all over the world to help out
with Canterbury.  I feel quite lucky that I live in a safe area.

1st of March
Back to school. A few days later rescuers were cleaning up the Cathedral and they found a time capsule.  I feel very proud to be a Cantabrian and this earthquake  has changed my life .

22/02/11

12.40 I was eating lunch in the classroom yum and some people  were practising cartoons.

12:15  Everything started to  shake.  I was very scared then  Mrs Siave shouted to do a turtle  under my desk.  We stayed under our desk and some people started crying.  Then we went outside. I was on the quad when the second aftershock hit.
In the afternoon the earthquake bell rang and everyone ran to the field.
Parents were rushing to their kids and
scooped them up to hug them and see
if they were ok.  Some wanted to stay and some wanted to go home to see that their family was ok.  Aunt Rachel and Kevin came to pick me up.

On one of the following days Nana and Emil came to pick me up. Dad called me when I got home then Emil turned the tv on.  I heard the tower of the Cathedral fell down. A woman was in the Cathedral and people rescued her, she came out with a broken arm. Lots of buildings fell down. My dad got chucked across the carpet to the door.

This was the darkest day of my life.
